To prevent the spread of the Coronavirus more and more of us are carrying anti bacterial hand gel in our cars. We are sanitising our hands more frequently between journeys particularly care workers.

Most of these hand gels are alcohol based. If you have a leather steering wheel the alcohol content in the gels can break down the protective coating. This exposes the leather underneath to friction and deterioration as well as drying it out. This leads to unsightly peeling and damage to the leather.

We recommend waiting a few minutes after application until the gel has completely absorbed into the skin before driving. Alternatively use a steering wheel cover.

If you believe your steering wheel is already starting to feel the effects of alcohol damage, start by cleaning it with a specialist leather cleaner or even a little soap and water but don’t get it too wet! Then dry with a cloth or towel before applying a good leather conditioner. Leave the conditioner to absorb overnight before attempting to drive, as the conditioner may make the wheel slippery.

Hope this helps and stay safe x
